In July 2015, San Diego State University’s School of Nursing, School of Social Work, and Graduate School of Public Health, along with the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services (AIS), UCSD Geriatric Medicine and five community partners received a grant for $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) to cultivate the development the next generation of geriatric health workers in San Diego County. The collaborative established the San Diego/Imperial Geriatric Education Center (SDIGEC), and it is based out of San Diego State University’s Academy for Professional Excellence
The SDIGEC is working to build an integrated geriatric system of care by providing workforce training across the spectrum of care from health care professionals and social workers, to family caregivers. The SDIGEC has also begun recruitment of nursing, social work and medical students for the Alzheimer’s and Other Dementia student stipend and fellowship programs.
